Standard Coding Systems

The clinical vocabulary that resides in the Ontology Management Cell was partially built using terminology from several standard coding systems. These codes can be used to search for a particular term (see section on Search by Code). The following are some examples of standard coding systems.

ICD-9

  • International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision

  • Primarily used for disease surveillance, immunization rates and environmental monitoring.

  • Maintained by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).


        Example:

        Code: 414.9

        Description:  Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease, unspecified



LOINC

  • Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes

  • Primarily used for Clinical Health Information (CHI) such as laboratory and clinical test results, history and physicals, discharge summaries, operative notes, tumor registry and nursing observations.

  • Licensed and maintained by Regenstrief Institute.


        Example:

        Code: 13969-1

        Description:  CPK-MB


NDC

  • National Drug Code

  • Universal product identifier for drugs intended for human use. Drug products are identified and reported using the NDC.

  • Maintained by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).


        Example:

        Code: 12783-*178-87

        Description:  Briston-Myers Squibb, Pravachol, 20 mg tablets


UMLS

  • Unified Medical Language System

  • A comprehensive thesaurus and ontology of biomedical concepts.

  • Maintained by the National Library of Medicine.


        Example:

        Code: C0001403

        Description:  Addison's Disease
